Drunken Spotlight: L.O.S.T. by Keith C. Smith

Hello there Drunken Fools!

I probably said this in the past but one great thing about being part of the Webcomic Planet Collective is we get to meet great people.

One of my colleagues at WCP is a real Renaissance Geek, Keith C. Smith.

Since early 2006, Keith writes and draws a comic called  L.O.S.T. NO, you geeks, not that Lost, if you think you’ll see Evangeline Lilly, get lost (lost.. get it? get it?)!. Erm.. ok, back on the subject. As the author says himself,  L.O.S.T. is a semi-autobiographical comic about himself. The comic is all about his thoughts on life experiences, with a bit of surreal and fantasy at times.

I am urging you to go read that great comic, now, right away! Hey! what did I just say? NOW Stop reading this and go read the comic!

Cheers.

Drunken Spotlight: The Dreamer by Lora Innes

Thank Dionysus, it’s Friday!

Hello Drunken Fools!

There was something I started a while back called “Drunken Spotlight” where I would present a webcomic I like/discovered/etc.. For no reasons, I never did it. So I decided to bring it back! The content of the article has nothing to do with alcohol, being drunk, etc.. But It’s just fit with the website so… erm…

I do have a huge list of webcomics I want to read. The thing is, there is no way I would start reading a webcomic without going through its entire archives, starting from the beginning. So that explains why I have a long list, I don’t always have the time to do so. But I did realize last night that it is easier to do it, when sitting on the couch, Hockey game in the background and the Tablet PC in my hands and start reading a webcomic.

So last night I decided to do that. I picked one webcomic that looked interesting. Surely enough, I went through the entire archives and I loved  it!

The webcomic is called “The Dreamer” and is written and drawn by Lora Innes

theDreamer-468x60
The Dreamer is about a seventeen years old girl, Beatrice, living two different lives. One life, in the 21st century, where she is an High School Senior student; and the other life, a seventeen years old girl, in a very detailed  dream,  with her 21st century memories. But this dream brings her back in 1776, right at the beginning of the US Independence War.

The hero is struggling between dream & reality. But today, while she seems  to know what reality is and what dream is, will this last? My personal question is, which is really the reality and which is really the dream? Wooooa!

I really enjoyed going through all issues of The Dreamer and will keep following its regular updates going forward.

What really caught my attention and what really made this comic extremely enjoyable for me is the Historical style of the comic. A few years back( few isn’t really the word now), I did study to get my bachelor degree in History. While this University was pushing (a bit too much) for Canadian and Quebec history, I didn’t get the chance to get enough of international history. So I never had the chance to learn more on the US Independance War. I did stopped near the end of my studies, I got tired of Canadian/Quebec History. But when I see comics like The Dreamer, some part of what used to be a passion (history) is coming back to me :)

Also, I think if you look at the comic, we can easily add a beautiful and amazing art style to the comic. Art and Story are merging together as a whole!

If I had to give one little comment to Lora would be to have a RSS feed for the Comic itself. But at least she does have one for the blog and it will help me to follow the new updates :)

Also, Lora will be sharing a table at C2E2 with Alan from Rival Angels. Hopefully I’ll get the chance to meet them and have a chat!

Please go check it out!

Cheers!

Hi there Drunken F0ols!

One thing I love in being part of the WCP Collective is that we get to meet great artists. And once in a blue moon, we get to “plug” on of our colleague :P

This time, I get to talk about a very interesting webcomic, result of the mind of Barry Linck.

“He Casts Spells, He Shoots Things, he is Phineus, Magician for Hire!

Hey, when there’s paranormal stuff going on, screw Scully and Mulder! Let’s get the real pros (Phin & Sara) take care of it! Seriously, they will fight and win, there is money for them to make out of it! :D

Please check out this amazing comic!

Cheers!

Drunken Spotlight: Bob the Squirrel

Happy Thursday Drunken Fools!

One thing I love about being part of the WCP Collective is that I get to discover great artist and comics. And Bob the Squirrel by Frank Page is not an exception.

bob080720

Bob the Squirrel’s environment is quite simple: Bob is a grumpy squirrel who seems to have decided to live with a comic artist, who, by pure coincidence, looks exactly like Frank and also by pure coincidence, is also named Frank. Well, these are probably not coincidences at all :P

Go check great strips at  http://www.bobthesquirrel.com I guarantee you that you will not be disappointed!

Cheers!

Drunken Spotlight: Capes & Babes

Happy Thursday Drunken Fools and welcome to the Drunken Spotlight of the week!

This week, I have the honor to talk about a very great webcomic and colleague from the Webcomic Planet Collective, Capes & Babes by Chris Flick!

capesnbabes

The reason why I’m very happy to do a spotlight on Capes n Babes is for the simple reason I was already an addicted reader before joining the Collective. Look on the right column under “Webcomics I like”, Capes n Babes has been there for a while now.

Chris gets his influence from comic book heroes and real life events surrounding a comic book store in a strip mall. Add to this a werewolf in love with a vampire… if you don’t think THIS is awkward, maybe you should read about werewolves and vampires or just watch the Underworld movies… Also, the werewolf (Roy) and the vampire (Roni) are big fans of Karaoke… making this even more awkward.

Capes n Babes is also about a difficult relationship between Marc & Joey, I’m wondering if they will ever be able to communicate properly to each other. But that is what makes the relation interesting between  the two of them.

Also, indirectly, Chris was some sort of an inspiration for me when I started to add the yellow eyes in my strip a few months ago. I was trying to find a way to make my characters really look drunk when they were totally smashed but I didn’t know what to do. Then I saw this strip and the next one and I knew right away I had to do something with the eyes of my characters.

Anyway, I love Chris’ webcomic and you SHOULD go check it out!

Drunken Review: Cock & Bull

March 11th, 2009 | by Antoine
Posted In: Blog, Blog, Drunken Reviews

yolk-aid_t_shirtTitle: Cock & Bull
Author: Arnie Dunnel
7 days a week

With Cock & Bull, the comic, perverts will be disappointed! As you can see from the picture, the “cock” here is a rooster. I thought I had to point that out.

Forget Tom & Jerry, forget Yogi & Boo Boo bear, forget Itchy & Scratchy. Cock & Bull are by far the best animal duo.

Cock & Bull is the  creation of a pure genius and old hermit born in 1879. It’s surprising to see how an old fart face like him still have some creativity left in him.

The layout of the comic itself is very minimal and simple, which is why it makes it so great. The comic is about a rooster (I’ll use rooster because it still feels weird to weird cock…can’t help it) and a bull on a farm. They are always standing on the same spot (I suspect the rooster being on a box or something or he must be a hell of a huge rooster, lucky chickens…) in a field and observing the day to day events surrounding them.

The rooster and the bull are obviously the two studs of the farm, filled with testosterone and watching over the rest of the farm. They are indeed the two kings over there, think about it,  both a rooster and a bull are the leaders of their own harem. One harem filled with chicken and the other filled with cows.  Note: I wrote that last paragraph late last night and today’s strip was not up; and funny enough, the strip is about the bull being threaten of losing his cow exclusivity!!!

I love the way the two characters are being drawn. The strip is still pretty new (started February 9th), but already they evolved drastically, making them adorable. But beware! Do not piss them off, I’m sure they could be very dangerous (the rooster is a professional pecker you know). Also, “Arnie” has a talent to work on their facial expression, and one of t hem is mad, you can be scared easily by their mad look.

Also, the website itself has some small hidden hilarious stuff, like the footer’s note, the “about” section that says it all about the old and weird author. Okay…. he’s not really old and he’s not really an hermit. The real author is mainly a comics for kids artist and for obvuious reason, he wanted to use a different name for Cock & Bull. If you really need to figure out who he is, just do your homework, he is easy to find *cough!*…twitter…*cough!*.

Finally, quick suggestion I would give: the same as I gave to 1977 author: you really should take the time to design a menu bar of your own to make it look less than the ComicPress template. While ComicPress is an amazing template (hey, I’m using too…), a few differences on your website may attract more people and keep more reader!

Kudos to Cock n Bull!!

Final note: And another thing I just discovered as I’m writing this “review”, the author is actually reading the Drunken Fools! This morning while losing my precious time analyzing my Google Analytics stats, I noticed some hits coming from him! It just made my day! And please, do not think this review is a brown nosing rant by me simply to thank him. I swear I didn’t know about it before I started to write this article. If you don’t believe me, I’ll send the professional pecker to kick your butt.

Cheers!

Drunken Review: 1977

March 3rd, 2009 | by Antoine
Posted In: Blog, Blog, Drunken Reviews

1977
Title: 1977 – Life, one toke at a time
Author: W. Byron Wilkins

1977: Star Wars
1977: I was 5 years old for a little portion of the year
1977: Year when my parents moved from a big city to a little town in the boonies

1977: The Comic

While I don’t remember too much of  the 70′s, the musical culture of this period is strongly present in my life and occupies more than 77% of my I-Pod and 77% of my downloaded content in Rock Band.

Last Sunday, at the TGT Webcomics Podcast, W. Byron Wilkins, author of 1977 was the guest of the show. I never heard of the comic before. Before the show, I quickly looked at the comic and saw enough already to get my attention and to log into the show. Before the comic itself, I first discovered the author. Only after a few minutes I told myself, my God, this guy sounds like a radio host. And surely enough, we heard later he did for a News Station, and spent 30 years creating/producing/directing videos (quoted from his own Bio). Something I couldn’t confirm is that I thought I heard him saying he did some Radio Hosting at some point, if he did, I wouldn’t be suprised. On Twitter, Byron describes himself as a “Loveable old fart who draws comics. I could tell, only by listening to him, his Twitter description wasn’t a lie. Byron is a storyteller both “live” and in his webcomic.

If you don’t know the comic yet, now you know for sure when the story is happening. 1977 is about 4 friends, living together, two dudes and two hot chicks and they play in a band; typical dream back in these days. I don’t want to tell too much about the characters and the story as I want you to discover them by yourself, like I did myself Sunday night. What I want to say is that 1977 is all about young adults enjoying life as it was in the 70′s:  Sex, Drugs and Rock and Roll, not in that specific order. Follow the heroes of the comic in road trip mini-stories, beer jokes, couch situations and even some fantasy and Sc-Fi situation (are they real or simple results of the weird cigarettes they are smoking, I’ll let you decide!).

Okay, I’m a grown up guy and I have to admit one thing I noticed right away: women with big boobs. But honestly, what really kept my attention and helped me to go through the entire archive,  are the music references in each and every post. The big majority of the strip’s titles are a reference to a song or an album from a Classic Rock band/singer from the 60′s or 70′s.  I did notice a few exception such as when Byron made a reference to Abba, which actually disturbed me for a few seconds or a Title “Pop Goes the Pringles” which is a reference to a 80′s song by Men Without Hats which made me laugh a lot.

Also, what I love about the comic is the fact Byron takes the time to tell a story in his blog linked to the strip, thing that not all fellow webcomickers are doing, unfortunately.

If I had to compare 1977 to a TV Show, I would say a merge between “How I Met Your Mother” and of course, “That 70′s Show”

Finally, if I could suggest something to improve to Byron is the actual Website. It has too much of the Comicpress Theme Layout, and could use some design upgrades. Don’t get me wrong here, Comicpress is a wonderful template for us to use for our webcomics, but the look of your site is also another factor to get some extra readers.

Enough said, I love 1977 and it is now in my Top 5 webcomics!

Cheers!
